Unable to sustain pregnancies

We were both in our 20s when we got married in 2008. Our problem was not in conceiving, but in sustaining pregnancy. We had gone to three gynecologists and tried Fengshui, Malay massage, switching to an organic diet, and saw a traditional Chinese medicine specialist in women’s health, but none of these worked. Li Yan even switched her work schedule to part-time, hoping to eliminate the stress factor that was a common explanation for couples with fertility issues.

I had a low percentage of normal sperm morphology, while Li Yan had uterine fibroids and ovarian cysts (which were previously removed, but they grew back!). It was probably because of these factors that we would usually take a long time to conceive, and Li Yan would get scared every time we did, because of the possibility of miscarriage.

Given Li Yan’s history, we found it disturbing that the gynaecologists only saw us once a month at the beginning of the pregnancy and it was always only when she had spotting during the pregnancy that she was given progesterone jabs. Once, we tried going to a gynaecologist near our place so that Li Yan could go in for scans whenever she wanted to, but that did not help to prevent a miscarriage either.

After our fourth miscarriage, we sent the fetus for testing. Li Yan also went through a miscarriage marker test to see if she carried any antibodies that would reject a fetus. However, the gynaecologist could not find any reason or explanation for the miscarriage.

A team approach

Li Yan’s friend introduced the Creighton method to her. She told Li Yan about a story that covered Naprotechnology in a magazine published by Mount Alvernia Hospital. The lady in the story also experienced multiple miscarriages and successfully had 2 children after receiving treatment. Li Yan read it and went online to read up on Naprotechnology. In November 2012, we started on the FertilityCare program.

Partnering with FertilityCare gave us a lot of insight into how pregnancy and the fertility cycle works. The charting process also increased Li Yan’s knowledge of how her body worked. It was a pleasant experience working together as a couple instead of Li Yan doing everything on her own.

After learning and charting for some cycles, Li Yan saw Dr. John Hui who prescribed her nevramin to improve her cervical mucus. Dr. John also did tests to find out why Li Yan kept miscarrying, but the results were non-conclusive. In the meantime, we continued with a healthy diet and taking Chinese herbs.

Assurance, finally

In December 2013, one year after we approached FertilityCare, we conceived. Li Yan saw Dr. John every two weeks, and looked forward to appointments as the close monitoring helped her to know that the fetus was safe, even with occasional spotting.

Dr. John did a blood test at every fortnightly appointment to check her progesterone levels, and according to her blood test results, prescribed progesterone injections or pills to support the pregnancy. Some weeks Li Yan didn’t have to take any injections or pills. Dr. John also reassured us when we felt worried.

At home, I helped to administer the jabs up to twice a week. His involvement meant that we were in this together, and this strengthened our bond as a couple. – Hong Huat

At the advice of our other gynecologist, Li Yan went through a procedure to administer a cerclage (a cervical stitch) early in the pregnancy as a precaution based on her past history. It was subsequently removed at 36 weeks. We thought our baby would come out soon after, but to our relief, she arrived at 38 weeks via natural birth.

Success!

After 19 hours of labour, we happily welcomed our baby girl, Ginny, on 18 September 2014.

We’re glad to have found Naprotechnology, which helped us to conceive and keep our baby, and build our relationship as a couple on this journey!
